There are three general types of cover letters. Choose a type of letter that matches your reason for writing. Review Cover Letter Samples Introduction Each cover letter you write should be customized to include: Signature A cover letter is a document sent with your resume to provide additional information on your skills and experience. A cover letter should complement, not duplicate topic essay writing ielts, your resume. Its purpose is to interpret the data-oriented, factual resume and add a personal touch. At the start of your cover letter explain which job you're applying for. You can either do this on a line by itself (e.g. "Re: Application for Stock Controller position") or in the opening paragraph (e.g. "I am writing to apply for the recently advertised Stock Controller position.") For example 5th grade essay topics, if there's a tool or software or skill the job requires - like machining tools or cash handling - mention it in your cover letter (but make sure you mention it correctly!). After listing your skills and experience you should explain why this means you're suited to the job (e.g. "The combination of my interest in AFL and my experience with book-keeping makes me ideally suited for this job.") Remember that if you say you have a skill or experience, you need to show how you've used it or how you got it (e.g. if you say you've got child-minding skills, mention some jobs where you've used them). Make sure you'll be able to answer the number you give - no sense giving your home phone if you're not going to be home to answer it. Avoid addressing your letter "To Whom It May Concern" if you can. Sometimes you might want to work for a particular business or organisation even though there haven't been any specific jobs advertised. Contacting these businesses directly to ask if they have any jobs available is a perfectly legitimate thing to do. It can show a high level of motivation and enthusiasm, and could even lead to a job. Your cover letter needs to show that you know what the job involves and what the organisation requires. To do this you need to be as specific as you can about your skills and qualities and how they match the job or organisation's needs. If you haven't heard back in a couple of weeks, it's okay for you to contact them to ask for a response - try emailing them or calling them to discuss your letter directly. Make sure your email address is a professional sounding one. An email address like [email protected] doesn't create the right impression. Your cover letter should finish by asking the reader to look at your resume. It should also ask them to contact you about an interview. Sometimes you'll be asked to send your cover letter as an email instead of a separate document. Hi. I began an essay on the topic ; reasons why pursuing college education is important. I had it started off this way… Aristotle said it best when he stated, “Education is the best provision for life’s journey.” Pursuing a college education provides individuals with career pportunities, higher income and experiences necessary in the journey of life. Please do you think I started off good or too weak? I need your help as this is a great assignment for me to make up for my mid semester examination which I was unable to attend! Steps in Constructing a Thesis Think of yourself as a member of a jury writing essays in college, listening to a lawyer who is presenting an opening argument. You'll want to know very soon whether the lawyer believes the accused to be guilty or not guilty, and how the lawyer plans to convince you. Readers of academic essays are like jury members: before they have read too far, they want to know what the essay argues as well as how the writer plans to make the argument. After reading your thesis statement, the reader should think, "This essay is going to try to convince me of something. I'm not convinced yet, but I'm interested to see how I might be." Anticipate the counterarguments. Once you have a working thesis, you should think about what might be said against it. This will help you to refine your thesis, and it will also make you think of the arguments that you'll need to refute later on in your essay. (Every argument has a counterargument. If yours doesn't, then it's not an argument—it may be a fact essays on quality of life, or an opinion, but it is not an argument.) Michael Dukakis lost the 1988 presidential election because he failed to campaign vigorously after the Democratic National Convention. A thesis should be as clear and specific as possible. Avoid overused, general terms and abstractions. For example sample psychology thesis statements, "Communism collapsed in Eastern Europe because of the ruling elite's inability to address the economic concerns of the people" is more powerful than "Communism collapsed due to societal discontent." When a teaching assistant or professor is marking an essay, they are looking for a clearly-defined statement or series of statements that professes the point you are trying to make within your paper. Have you ever battled while trying to develop a thesis for an essay? You’re not alone! It is one of the areas that students often struggle with most. Although there are different kinds of theses for different kinds of papers (research papers vs. comparative papers vs. literary essays etc), they all follow the same general structure. All theses must: If your assignment asks you to take a position or develop a claim about a subject, you may need to convey that position or claim in a thesis statement near the beginning of your draft. The assignment may not explicitly state that you need a thesis statement because your instructor may assume you will include one. When in doubt, ask your instructor if the assignment requires a thesis statement. When an assignment asks you to analyze online writing assignments in india, to interpret, to compare and contrast, to demonstrate cause and effect, or to take a stand on an issue, it is likely that you are being asked to develop a thesis and to support it persuasively. (Check out our handout on understanding assignments for more information.) Let’s look at another example. Suppose your literature professor hands out the following assignment in a class on the American novel: Write an analysis of some aspect of Mark Twain’s novel Huckleberry Finn. “This will be easy,” you think. “I loved Huckleberry Finn !” You grab a pad of paper and write: This weak thesis restates the question without providing any additional information. It does not tell the reader where you are heading. A reader of this weak thesis might think “What reasons? How are they the same? How are they different?” Ask yourself these same questions and begin to compare Northern and Southern attitudes (perhaps you first think “The South believed slavery was right, and the North thought slavery was wrong”). Now my name essay, push your comparison toward an interpretation—why did one side think slavery was right and the other side think it was wrong? You look again at the evidence example essay outline expository, and you decide that you are going to argue that the North believed slavery was immoral while the South believed it upheld the Southern way of life. You write: Writing in college often takes the form of persuasion—convincing others that you have an interesting, logical point of view on the subject you are studying. Persuasion is a skill you practice regularly in your daily life. You persuade your roommate to clean up, your parents to let you borrow the car, your friend to vote for your favorite candidate or policy. In college, course assignments often ask you to make a persuasive case in writing. You are asked to convince your reader of your point of view. This form of persuasion, often called academic argument, follows a predictable pattern in writing. After a brief introduction of your topic what is a job cover letter, you state your point of view on the topic directly and often in one sentence. This sentence is the thesis statement thesis example topics for it students, and it serves as a summary of the argument you’ll make in the rest of your paper. This final thesis statement presents an interpretation of a literary work based on an analysis of its content. Of course, for the essay itself to be successful, you must now present evidence from the novel that will convince the reader of your interpretation. Through its contrasting river and shore scenes, Twain’s Huckleberry Finn suggests that to find the true expression of American democratic ideals, one must leave “civilized” society and go back to nature. A thesis is the result of a lengthy thinking process. Formulating a thesis is not the first thing you do after reading an essay assignment. Before you develop an argument on any topic narrative essay and examples, you have to collect and organize evidence, look for possible relationships between known facts (such as surprising contrasts or similarities), and think about the significance of these relationships. Once you do this thinking, you will probably have a “working thesis” that presents a basic or main idea and an argument that you think you can support with evidence. Both the argument and your thesis are likely to need adjustment along the way. Ramage, John D. John C. Bean, and June Johnson. The Allyn & Bacon Guide to Writing. 7th ed. New York: Longman, 2014. Writers use all kinds of techniques to stimulate their thinking and to help them clarify relationships or comprehend the broader significance of a topic and arrive at a thesis statement. For more ideas on how to get started, see our handout on brainstorming . A thesis statement is a sentence in which you state an argument about a topic and then describe, briefly, how you will prove your argument. These formulas share two characteristics all thesis statements should have: they state an argument and they reveal how you will make that argument. They are not specific enough compare and contrast essay samples for college, however form of application letter for job, and require more work. Beginning thesis: Between 1820 and 1860 women's domestic labor changed as women stopped producing home-made fabric, although they continued to sew their families' clothes, as well as to produce butter and soap. With the cash women earned from the sale of their butter and soap they purchased ready-made cloth, which in turn, helped increase industrial production in the United States before the Civil War. An argument takes a stand on an issue. It seeks to persuade an audience of a point of view in much the same way that a lawyer argues a case in a court of law. It is NOT a description or a summary. A thesis makes a specific statement to the reader about what you will be trying to argue. Your thesis can be a few sentences long, but should not be longer than a paragraph. Do not begin to state evidence or use examples in your thesis paragraph. When at school organizing information for a research paper, I participated in all activities what is a thesis statement question, clubs and societies that had anything to do with engineering, computer sciences and electronics. By the end of my school years, I understood that it was electronic engineering and communications that were my greatest passion. Electronic communications is the field of science that has completely changed our lives in a period of time less than several decades, creating the picture of the world that is completely different from what we have been used to for millennia. And I am very eager to take part in this changing. High school seniors are faced with the challenge of summarizing the last 17 years into 600 words essay writing topics in english with answers, all while showcasing their “unique” personality against thousands of other candidates. “Instead of trying to come up with gimmicky, catchy first lines, start by sharing a moment,” says Janine Robinson, writing coach and founder of Essay Hell. “These mini stories naturally grab the reader … it’s the best way to really involve them in the story.” “It’s less about the topic and more about how you frame it and what you have to say about it, Robinson says. “The better essay is has the most interesting thing to say, regardless of a topic that involves a crisis or the mundane.” “I think most students are torn between a pathway dividing a diary entry and a press release. It’s supposed to be marketing document of the self,” Crawford says. The following tips will help applicants make the leap from ‘average’ to ‘accepted’: Let the moment you choose be revealing of your personality and character. Describe how it shaped who you are today and who you will be tomorrow. Rawlins recommends showing the essay to a family member or friend and ask if it sounds like the student. “Take a few days and come back to it. But only do that once,” Rawlins says. “Reading it over and over again will only drive you nuts.” At the end of the day, colleges want to accept someone who is going to graduate, be successful in the world and have the university associated with that success. In your essay, it is vital that you present yourself as someone who loves to learn, can think critically and has a passion for things—anything. Colleges are tired of reading about that time you had a come-from-behind- win in the state championship game or the time you built houses in Ecuador, according to Robinson. Get creative! While colleges tend to nod to disadvantaged students, roughing up your background won’t help your cause. 6. Read the success stories. While most students spend days, sometimes weeks, perfecting their personal statements, admissions officers only spend about three to five minutes actually reading them, according to Jim Rawlins, director of admissions at the University of Oregon. These are a few topics on independent consultant Arun Ponnusamy’s list of what not to write about in your college application essay. (A few more: Don't write about mom and dad's divorce, and no general philosophizing—you're 17 thesis argumentative essay, get over yourself.) Admissions season is under way, and with early applications deadlines starting November 1, you've only got a few more days to polish your make-or-break essay. Straight As and stellar SAT scores won't be enough. In a year where 10 brilliant kids are vying for every one slot at your average Ivy League school (yes, that statistic is accurate), the personal essay has become a tipping point that can turn a deferral into an acceptance letter. On my first day I was astounded by the other kids. They all looked and acted alike. Almost all had the same clothing, hair styles, necklaces, flip-flops and backpacks with their names monographed on them. Nearly all of them also had iPods, this was almost four years ago when it was not so common to see iPods everywhere. I was amazed at how they treated their iPods so carelessly, when I have a friend who carefully saved her lunch money for months just to be able to buy one. Needless to say, she is very protective of it. Sitting in the cafeteria, I felt like I was back in fifth grade. Everyone brought nice neat little lunches what is history essay, packet perfectly in expensive lunch boxes. Mothers stood at the lunch line selling cookies to raise money for various organizations, as stay at home moms they had nothing else to do with their time. Buying a school lunch, I found, was something only the “reject” kids did. I lasted only a week at this place. Suddenly I missed everything from Spring Woods, even its “ghetto” identity. I missed the teachers who taught about ideas instead of forcing us to merely memorize. I missed the general accepting feeling that comes from such a heterogeneous mixture of people. There are no “reject” kids at Spring Woods. I could now see that though. Abigail Hook was applying to Harvard—the one school you don't want to tilt your hand near. And yet she chose to write her essay about giving up on ballet, rather than persevering once she'd tired of it. "It's OK to let down your guard, not be safe and sanitized," says Poch. "It can allow us to relate to you as a real human being. ( Click here to read Abigail's essay. ) I still sit and read aloud to my father. We sit on the same burgundy velvet sofa, my father on the left, and I as close to him as possible. The only differences are that now, he complains that I’m “too big to sit on his lap comparing and contrasting topics for papers,” and that we no longer read fairytales or Kipling, but my stories instead. Despite what admissions guidebooks tell you how to buy college papers, there's no surefire formula to the college essay. Poch confesses even a small error or two will not necessarily kill your chances of getting in—as long as it's not on purpose. "I once heard one [essay-writing] professional brag about slipping in mistakes to throw off admissions officers," he says. "That's just disgusting." “Any Person, Any Study” is what I have been told by alumni from Cornell. The famous quote by Erza Cornell best describes the opportunities that Cornell provides. But for me, “Any Person, Any Study” means something very different. Cornell University has a long academic tradition of teaching the young and hopeful minds of a new generation the beauty of education. Cornell graduates question, they analyze, they comprehend. Unlike many of my friends, I am a “privileged child.” I was born an American citizen. My parents have steady jobs. I live in a neighborhood zoned, if only barely, to a school called Memorial High School—the shiny, rich abundant school of the district. From my early childhood my parents had planned on me attending this high school, as supposedly it provides one of the best public school educations in Houston. At the end of 8th grade, a pivotal moment presented itself: I had to decide between the touted Memorial High School with all its benefits and clout or the “ghetto” Spring Woods where most of my closest friends were going. After much debate I finally settled on Spring Woods. Coming from a very small charter middle school, high school was rather shocking. I did not like it, and I blamed my unhappiness on my school—I thought I had made the “wrong decision.” At the beginning of the second semester, I choose to switch to the school I was supposed to go to—feeling that I would receive a “better” education. Rule #1: When Tackling a Global Issue, Make it Personal Hallie Jordan I was freed from resource room on the condition that I get A's on every other spelling test that year, which I did. Since then I have realized that I can never allow myself to live life in a metaphorical resource room. I must take accountability and responsibility for myself, and not accept special treatment where there is anyway I can avoid it. This philosophy was tested last year when I was signing up for the SAT. Standing on the second floor hall of my high school, I watch my fellow students swarm into the campus as the bell rings for the passing period. Leaning against the railing, observing, I reflect on how my life might be different had I chosen to attend a different high school. The scene below me feels like a little slice of the real world. A couple walks by and my ear quickly notices that they speak in Korean. I spot my Ethiopian friend Ike, almost dancing, as he moves through the crowd on the floor below me; his real name is so long no one can pronounce it. Later, my best friend will present me with some homemade Mexican Christmas ponche full of sugarcane to chew on. I reluctantly stop people watching and proceed to class. It always nice to stop and imagine all the different cultures and backgrounds can be found at my small school of barely 2,000 people. Everyone, I have realized, has their own distinct way of life defined by various situations from trying to succeed as a first generation immigrant to working to help their family make ends meet each month. There is nothing sheltered about Spring Woods High School. Being in Libya impressed upon me that it is often such circumstantial, unchosen factors as place of birth that largely determine the paradigms by which we live our lives. As much as I enjoyed the exotic experience of being in North Africa and the not-so-exotic experience of reconnecting with my family, my time in Libya paradoxically strengthened the latter half of my Arab-American identity. I had taken for granted the fact that we are free to practice Islam the way we want here in the U.S. next to neighbors lighting menorahs and friends who are atheists, and upon my return to Boston I found myself immediately appreciating this diversity at a new level, starting with the group of strangers with whom we waited at baggage claim. We all shared frustration and eyes peeled for our suitcases, but fortunately, not much else. As I pursue my passions of philosophy and theology as an undergraduate, I will approach with a more open mind the vast array of angles from which people view the world now that I have experienced life in a country so different from the one I call home, yet one that has inevitably shaped my own perspectives as I’ve grown up. Complexity. Life is complex all the way down to the atomic level. Organ systems comprised of bits of tissue, formed by cells, made up of organelles, formed by carbon compounds. Throughout high school, I have been fascinated by the complexity of life. The relationships between micro organism and macro organism, and how nature, by trial and error, has created structures that allow us to hear examples of argument essay thesis statement, feel, and see. Roberts worries that students tend to be too conservative with essays and are afraid to take risks. “There are no wrong answers here, and the last thing you want is a dry or boring essay,” he says. “We have 22 third person essay topics,000 applications, so it’s easy to blend into the crowd.” When I was 6 years old, I had a slight speech impediment that made me far too shy to read aloud in front of my peers. My father immediately decided the only way for me to overcome my fear would be to practice reading out loud. Every day, my father and I sat together, and I read to him. After a few days of children’s books, my father—sick of listening to fairytales—gave me a book of poems. I read Kipling’s “If” over and over to him, and it become my favorite poem. I was incredibly grateful to him for not only helping me to overcome my fear of public reading but also for instilling in me a love of reading and words. Having made up my mind, I loyally warded off anything that might jeopardize my decision. My usual passion and enthusiastic spark were gone, replaced by a deep longing to understand why exactly I had ever fallen in love with this painful profession and an intense need for stability when my world was moving out from beneath my sore feet. Serenade took the remains of me, a frustrated and tired dancer whose only instinct was to fight, and gently illuminated the silver lining in my painful disaster. Scoring the winning touchdown. Volunteering for blood drives or building houses. What you learned about poverty on your $9,000 trip to Africa. “No. It’s an artificial compensation that would only last as long as schools are forced to provide it; the real world can’t make those kind of concessions so I can’t take that crutch.” Rule #4: Make Sure You're the Hero of the Story Isabel Polon I have never been able to spell, but it wasn’t until 4th grade that I found out the, ironically hard to spell, word for my condition. When everyone did realize what was going on and why it was that I got Cs in spelling, I was packed off to resource room (i.e. Special Ed) to learn how to write pretty. But then I realized, amidst my confusion, that the reassurance, the hope that I hadn’t just wasted my childhood, was something I so uniquely needed. Yes the music and choreography were genius, but Serenade ’s magic lay in the ability it had to nudge me from frustrated to appreciative, from grief to celebration. Morgan Doff wasn't applying to a Christian school or one in an area that might take offensive to her lack of interest in religion, so she put it right out there on the page. "Students regularly conjure up who admissions officers are, what they look like and what they're interested in," says Pomona's Bruce Poch. "We purposely have a diverse staff with a variety of interests and backgrounds." That said, had Morgan been applying to, say, a school in the Deep South, she might have chosen her words more carefully. ( Click here to read Morgan's essay. ) Rahul Kishore The personal statement might just be the hardest part of your college application. Mostly this is because it has the least guidance and is the most open-ended. Custom Student Mr. Teacher ENG 1001-04 28 May 2016 The time of the day finally comes that I’ve been dreading the most… lunch. The nature of the financial crisis changed in the fall of 1931, when the commercial banking crisis spread throughout the entire nation. Wicker, Elmus. The Banking Panics of the Great Depression. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1996. A bank run on individual banks in a given state threatened other banks in that state. For this reason, states began declaring state banking holidays (Nevada was first, on October 31, 1932), which temporarily relieved banks of meeting their debt obligations. The spread of these statewide banking holidays increased the demand for currency in other states, with New York City banks feeling the most pressure. The Fed and commercial banks once again were concerned about a potential external drain of the US gold stock. During this period, fears that Roosevelt would devalue the currency led private banks and others with dollar assets to accumulate foreign currencies (Friedman and Schwartz 1963). According to Wicker, following Michigan’s banking holiday, which was declared on February 14 after troubled Detroit banks were unable to secure loans from the RFC, the drain on gold reserves accelerated. In the mean time, a number of cases related to fraud and cheating of banks and customers by unscrupulous persons have already been lodged in India with this type of banking facilities. Irrespective of that attempts have been made by the RBI and the banking authorities for promoting safety and soundness of online and e-banking facilities in the country by issuing necessary guidelines. In this system, consumers are embracing many benefits of e-banking. To have access to one’s accounts at any time and from any location through world wide web (www) is a convenient practice, which was unknown a short time ago. Thus, a bank’s internet presence transforms from ‘brochure/ware’ status to ‘internet banking’ status once the bank goes through a technology integration effort so as to enable its customer to access information about his or her specific account details. In accessing a true internet banking, any inquiry or transaction is processed online without any reference to the branch (anywhere banking) at any time. Thus providing Internet banking is gradually becoming a “need to have” than a “nice to have” service. Besides, some banks provide its customers the facility to purchase mutual funds directly from the online banking system. In a recent survey conducted by the Online Banking Association, member institutions rated security as the most important issue of online banking. Thus there is a dual requirement to protect customers privacy and product against fraud. Through Internet banking, recharging of prepaid phone has also become possible. It is no longer needed to rush to the vendor to recharge prepaid phones as and when talk time runs out. Here the customer just tops-up his prepaid mobile cards by logging in to Internet banking. By just selecting operator’s name, entering mobile number and the amount of recharge, the prepared phone of the customer is again back in action within few minutes. In order to make their bank account safe, one should follow certain security precautions. It is important that documents that contain confidential information are safeguarded. PIN or password should be changed immediately and memorized before destroying the mailers. There is no doubt that banks have crucial role to play in the growth and development of Indian economy. Remember that when it comes to writing personal essays, it is okay to change some details or facts such as names and dates if you find it necessary to do so out of respect for others. Whether you’ve been given a prompt (for example, “Write about the time in your life when you were happiest,”) or you’re starting from scratch, coming up with an idea can be difficult. One thing to keep in mind is that for your personal essay to really stand out, you need to write about an experience that not everybody goes through. A good place to start with any kind of essay is this paragraph and essay writing course on Udemy. It will walk you through the basic skills that you need to know as well as give you more advanced tips and tricks for writing great essays. However, there is still more that you need to know for this particular type of essay. Let’s start with the very beginning – coming up with an idea.
Recently I was able to go to a local elementary school and do acommunity service learning project. I had to help out a first, second and thirdgrade class with the Presidential Physical Fitness Test. The kids were doingthings like curl-ups and other exercises. I kept telling the kids they were doinggreat and encouraging them to do one more. When the gym teacher asked me how manycurl-ups they each did, she said that it was a lot more than they usually do. Iknow they did extra because of my encouragement. I think it really helped theirself-esteem. I made those little kids feel great about themselves and that makes me feelgreat. Most people hear the word community service and say ugh. They either think thatit's something "bad" people do to have time taken off their prison termor something that is totally boring. On the other hand I hear the word and getexcited because it's something I love doing. Whether it's volunteering fororganizations like Habitat for Humanity or teaching four-year-olds to swim Ienjoy doing it, because it makes people feel good when you help them. It alsomakes you feel good about yourself because you're helpingsomeone. And it was delicious. Great points Winn! I know what you mean about running. Sometimes I’m just not as motivated to run as to write. LOL. Good thing I’m not a professional athlete. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! If you really really really don’t want to write right now, chances are a lot of the reason behind your reluctance is stress. You’re feeling a lot of pressure to get something done on the deadline, or you’re feeling pressure because you have to live up to someone else’s expectations. You’re probably thinking that if you fail with this one article, novel revision, or blog post you’re career is kaput. You spend hours on end watching Web Therapy (an online web series starring the hilarious Lisa Kudrow) trying to desperately to avoid the work you need to do. much “open wiiiiiide” You’re exhausted. You’re burned out. You’re so sick of work, you almost can’t stand it. This article is pretty helpful. I like the ‘numb your pain’ angle. When I was in efeds (wrestling online, basis for my web series today) I had to write atleast one episode a week. I remember one time taking a shot of whiskey (wow a teenager drinking, anyone see that coming? lol) and wrote, very quickly, a nice scene that was considered one of my best. Sometimes our passions are not always fun, they’re just work. You’ve been there before . If you have to go through the process of writing something you really really really don’t want to write, then at least give yourself a great reward after you’re done. Then share the fun piece your wrote on a private blog or with your close friends and family! Oh my! That photo is so me! I mean right down to the spectacles. Uncanny! That’s exactly how my writing space looks! Indeed, I am exhausted. I am burned out. I’m sick of work…and yeah, I was hoping you would say it was ok to take a break. Funny how easy it is to update my status on Facebook and comment on those of my friends. Yet when I sit to write, the blinking cursor mocks. I can almost swear I’ve heard it snicker at me. I guess numbing and ice cream don’t sound so bad after all. Take it awa, Adele! I remember when I got my wisdom teeth taken out a few years back and I was told, after the surgery, that I could eat nothing but liquids until the wounds healed. So, just relax. No one ever died writing a bad blog post, a bad novel, or a bad freelance article. I’m assuming that, in this case, whatever writing you need to get done, just needs to get done. So, in this special situation, I’ll give you permission to handle things differently than I would normally recommend. In those instances, writing is just that thing you have to do because it’s good for your health and well-being. Sometimes the writing process is just like pulling teeth. Luckily, just like pulling teeth, all you got to do to get yourself to write, when you really really really don’t want to write, is to give yourself a big dose of “writer’s Novocaine:”
Two years ago, I helped launch a film-based campaign that raised close to $10,000 for Africans afflicted with HIV, Aids, and Tuberculosis. This effort helped open new doors for me. After executing this philanthropy I began building relationships with local journalists and charities that led me to raise more money for different causes such as Cystic Fibrosis and Juvenile Diabetes research. While working to support various organizations, I met many great people, including Dr. Paul Farmer, a famed humanitarian who visited Syracuse University last fall. Spending time with Dr. Farmer was an extremely moving and informative experience that would not have been possible without my prior charity work. I believe that when you take action to help others, you are investing in your own future. By extending yourself and taking action to support a belief, cause, individual, or group, you can reach new personal heights. One incentive for doing good is the respect that comes with being associated with philanthropy. People respect those who sacrifice their time and energy to promote positive change in the world. Think about celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Bono, and Bill Gates, and how their widely publicized efforts to help the underprivileged have become significant parts of their star status. In today’s world, arguably the most abused power is that of celebrity, yet these icons have demonstrated that public acts of selflessness can add to their image. There’s no reason why the average individual can’t personally benefit from doing charity as well. I believe we all have an obligation to help those who are less fortunate, and that doing so can reward us with more than just feelings of doing good. It is taught that all good deeds should be done selflessly and out of the kindness of your heart. I believe, however, that people should consider how helping others will help themselves in other ways.
